The village is located approximately 66 km from Tulcea, in front of the famous Chilia Fortress, built in 1479 by Stephen the Great. Chilia Veche is the most populated village in the Danube Delta, having more than 3000 inhabitants. It can be reached by car or by the passenger ships that travel between Tulcea and Periprava.

The village has a huge potential for tourism and water sports. The wide fields surrounding the village are ideal for hunting, especially in autumn. Besides its natural landscape, we mention the Orthodox Church, one of the oldest religious monuments in Romania. Its height reaches 52 m, being the second tallest church in the country, after the Black Church in Brasov.

Stipoc old-rite orthodox monk monastery is the only monastery in the delta, placed on a levee deposit. The worship place resides in a small wood church, a few cells and the refectory.
